The Midnight Village Book Review

About the book

The Midnight Village by Holly Martin is a sweet romance within a magical setting. Star Brightheart bakes cupcakes for a living. But when a food critic almost dies after eating one of her cupcakes, Star finds herself engulfed in a media storm and in need of an escape. When the chance to rent a house in the secretive village of Midnight presents itself, Star seizes the opportunity.

It’s not long before Star stumbles upon Midnight’s secret and realises that all of her new neighbours are witches and the cat that comes with her new home can talk. As Star navigates this magical world with the help of town mayor Wolf Oakwood, she discovers she was drawn to Midnight for a reason.

My thoughts

The Midnight Village gave me big Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Charmed vibes. Personally, I love that. It’s a light-hearted read and, as it’s October as I write this, perfect for Halloween lovers who want to read something mystical, but not scary.

The village of Midnight really comes alive throughout the book. It has all the qualities you’d expect in a cosy romance from quirky characters to strong friendships. There’s even a street of local shops, only this one is fabulously magical. The doorway of the bookshop is a giant open book and mugs of steaming hot chocolate float around, ready for you to grab whenever it takes your fancy.

I’m currently researching my latest World War Two novel. As you might imagine, much of that research is heavy and The Midnight Village has been a refreshing source of escapist fiction for me.
