My month in books - October 2024

This month was special for me because it marked the publication of my second WWII historical novel.

The Clover Girls’ Network

The Clover Girls’ Network is a coming-of-age story that captures the quiet strength of a young woman swept up in the turmoil of history. It’s a tale of loss, love, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship that can illuminate even the darkest of times in war-torn Poland. You can read the full blurb by clicking here.

All That Remains: A Life in Death by Sue Black

As well as proofreading my own novel (a lot!), this month I also finished reading All That Remains: A Life in Death by Professor Dame Sue Black, an anatomist and forensic anthropologist. I can’t tell you how much I loved this book. It’s fascinating, thought-provoking, and entertaining. There are interesting stories of investigations into suspicious deaths and deaths by natural disasters. But I was particularly taken by the insights the author gave into the people who leave their bodies to science – who they are and why they choose to do it. All That Remains is a practical look at death without in any way being morbid or gratuitous.

A Breath of Fresh Air by Jessica Redland

My next read was something completely different: A Breath of Fresh Air by Jessica Redland. This is the second book in Jessica’s Escape to the Lakes series. You can read my review of book one here.

A Breath of Fresh Air follows the adventures of Rosie, the lovable best friend seen in the first book. Rosie is the manager of Willowdale Hall Riding Stables. When the owner of Willowdale Hall is taken ill, his son OIiver steps in. Unfortunately for Rosie, Oliver creates trouble for Rosie almost as soon as he arrives.

I was eager to read this book and it didn’t disappoint. It does end on a cliffhanger, but don’t let this put you off. The romantic plot is nicely resolved by the end of the book and the lingering question is answered in the first chapter of book three. I read the Kindle edition, which includes a sample of book three, so there’s no need to purchase it separately. That said, I’m so invested in this series that I immediately bought book three – The Best is Yet to Come – and devoured it in days.

The Best is Yet to Come by Jessica Redland

The Best is Yet to Come features Emma who has quit her teaching job to support her boyfriend’s dream of managing his own farm. Emma has her own aspirations, including starting an alpaca walking business on the farm. But when things don’t go as planned, Emma is left heartbroken with a dream that suddenly feels out of her grasp.

Jessica Redland’s Escape to the Lakes series is perfect for fans of small town romances with its tight-knit community, women who champion each other, and, of course, a sprinkle of love in the air.

Thanks for reading this far!
