The Book of Beginnings by Sally Page Book Review

About the book

The Book of Beginnings by Sally Page is a charming story about the value of true friendship.

Jo Sorsby is grappling with the unexpected break up of her long-term relationship and a falling out with her childhood best friend. When her beloved uncle becomes ill and needs care, Jo agrees to manage his stationery shop for a while. It’s here, surrounded by ink-filled fountain pens and an array of colourful notebooks, that Jo meets Ruth and Malcolm.

Ruth, nicknamed the Runaway Vicar by the media, carries secrets that she’s not yet ready to reveal. As does Malcom, a retired tax analyst, who is still trying to figure out who he wants to be.

As their paths intertwine, the three form an unexpected bond, one which could potentially bring about much-needed changes in their lives. But only if they’re brave enough to open up to each other.

My thoughts

The Book of Beginnings is a beautiful story with a fascinating cast of characters. From the very first chapter, I warmed to Jo and her relatable struggles. As the book delved deeper into her past, I was rooting for Jo to finally realise her worth and leave her lousy her ex-boyfriend behind.

Every character is quirky and lovable with their own unique story. Their distinctive personalities added layers to the book, keeping me engaged in each of their personal journeys.

There’s also a lovely historical element woven through the book involving some of the inhabitants of Highgate Cemetery. These ghostly secondary characters help Jo, Ruth, and Malcolm realise some important truths about themselves.

This was my first Sally Page novel and I will definitely read more.
