About the book
For a spooky read that’s not too scary, try The Secrets of Ghosts by Sarah Painter. Katie Harper has just turned twenty-one, and her only wish is for her magical powers to finally appear. The Harper women are known for their unique gifts, and Katie is getting impatient. Her attempts to learn potions have resulted in one failure after another and she’s fed up with waitressing at the local hotel, waiting for her life to start.
She’s on duty at the hotel the night a body is discovered and a series of strange feelings come over her. When Katie’s powers finally appear, so do the ghosts and it’s not long before the ghosts realise that Katie can see and hear them. But what do they expect from her? And which of them can be trusted?
As Katie learns how to handle her new powers, she also learns just how dangerous communicating with the dead can be.

My thoughts
This book is a spooky whodunit where many of the prime suspects happen to be dead. But there’s also a less than straightforward romance for Katie and complex family relationships.
Katie’s unexpected power intrigued me and I enjoyed following her journey as she tried to understand it. The mystery and the cast of dubious characters added to the fun, making this book an entertaining read.
The Secrets of Ghosts is part of a three-book series. There are hints at the plotlines of the other books, but it’s a standalone story that can be enjoyed on its own. The Garden of Magic and The Language of Spells focus on other members of the Harper family and are definitely worth reading.
